Today, Amazon has dropped the price of the 2TB Samsung 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive (SSD) to only $134.99. That’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen for what is currently the fastest SSD on the market. Note that this SSD was released in November of 2022 with an MSRP of $280. That’s a pretty huge price drop on a flagship SSD in such a short amount of time.
Samsung 990 Pro 2TB PS5 SSD for $134.99
The 990 Pro is currently Samsung’s flagship SSD and it is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs on the market. Samsung claims a 50% improved performance per watt over its Samsung 980 Pro predecessor. It boasts blazing sequential speeds of 7,450MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write and random speeds of 1400K/1550K IOPS. Unlike most other SSDs, the components are manufactured in-house. The 990 Pro utilizes the new Samsung Pascal controller and 7th gen TLC NAND flash chips.
There are a few top-tier SSDs that stand above the rest in terms of performance. These are the WD Black SN850X, the SK Hynix P41 Platinum, and the Seagate Firecuda 530, and now, the Samsung 990 Pro. Although the Samsung 990 is the newest and fastest, the performance gap between these top contenders is relatively minimal. It all comes down to the price. At its current price point, the 990 Pro is not only the fastest, it’s also the least expensive. Basically, this deal makes your choice a no-brainer.
Is the Samsung 990 Pro compatible with the PS5?
The Samsung 990 Pro is an excellent SSD for your PS5. From a purely performance perspective, it’s overkill; the stock SSD in your PS5 will be the limiting factor. You’ll want to pick up an PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 solid state drive with a rated 5,500MB/s read speed to match the PS5’s internal drive and the 990 Pro is much faster. However, at the current price point, this SSD is cheaper than many slower options, so you might as well get it anyways.
Note, however, that Sony recommends a heatsink attached to your SSD. The 990 Pro does not include a heatsink. Mind you, there is a 990 Pro with pre-installed heatsink, but it costs $309.99. It’s better to just purchase your own heatsink (we recommend this one for $10) and install it yourself. It’s very easy.
